Riviera Magazine – Hot List

This just in: As Orange County’s ascent continues so too does the parade of new arrivals. We investigated the newcomers and hand-picked the stunners for our Hot List…

LOFT IN TRANSLATION. We’ve always loved downtown Santa Ana for its old school charms, equal parts Tiajuana and old Orange County, but the neighborhood was lacking a certain je ne sais quoi. However, in the last year, new mixed-use artist’s lofts are catalyzing a very modern renaissance. Chris Givan, President and chief interior designer of Christopher James Interiors, has settled into one of the spaces, after making his name as the master of all that epitomizes old world style: Venetian plaster, faux finishes and wrought iron accents. His “garden” is a space within the loft where four white armchairs are clustered beneath a mini jungle of palms and flowering plants; a fountain in the shape of a bronzed faucet provides the ambient gurgle of a brook.

Coast Magazine Article

This article featured the work of interior designer Chris Givan and his loft located in the Artist’s Village in downtown Santa Ana.  The interiors were a mix of Tuscan and Mediterranean design combined with modern furnishings and clean lines.  Venetian plastered walls, concrete stained floors and modern furniture were joined to create one of the designers signature looks.

THE OWNER  A career in marketing with Citibank was working just fine for Chris Givan until about 13 years ago when he gutted and redesigned his Manhattan apartment.  “This is it,” he realized, and immediately enrolled in interior design school.  Ever since, Givan has been known for his old-world style with Italian Country Home showrooms in Los Angeles and Santa Ana.  Last year when he bought a live/work loft in Santa Ana’s artist’s village, he married that style with modernism and began specializing in transitional, instead of just traditional furnishings.  “Transitional furniture can fit in with something new or something old and can bring those two together.”

THE PRODUCT  Those pieces are the secret to creating a welcoming yet modern loft.  “With the number of lofts being built, more and more people have needed help designing and warming up these unique big spaces that are all one room, and many others are just looking for that loft look,” says Givan, who has turned his own living space into a showroom where everything is for sale.  “Everything here is for sale.  If there is anything you like, I can get it for you or make it for you,” he says, pointing to the chairs, the art, the plants, and the room dividers.

THE AMBIENCE  Far from sterile, Givan’s three-story live/work space is a warm retreat with deeply colored Venetian plastered walls, historical accents, flowing drapes, and original paintings that seamlessly blend with urban infrastructure like manhole style textured metal stairs, exposed ducting and concrete floors.

THE BOTTOM LINE  Whether you’re old world or new world, you’ll never want to leave.
